EarthWear introduced in Carlyle during Dickens

Tammy Bessant offers EarthWear, a line of all-natural handmade products.
Lizz Bottrell December 12, 2008

In a world full of creative, and sometimes misleading, product marketing, people can find it hard to determine what's really in that expensive lotion they're putting on their face or body.

Is it really all-natural and organic or is it just another clever marketing scheme to entice people to purchase an over-priced product which isn't any different than the next miracle-promising product.

Deciphering labels and attempting to determine whether products contain harmful parabens, chemicals or toxic ingredients can become a tedious task, even for the most educated in the world of beauty and health care. Fed up with misleading labels and expensive products that did nothing for her skin, Tammy Bessant took matters into her own hands.

"I started making my own products a year ago and it just grew from there," said Bessant. "I was selling to family and friends since last winter and in August I put myself out there to see if I could sell this to other people."

Bessant, who lives in Estevan, started EarthWear Face and Body Products as a way to share her truly all-natural, handmade products to anyone interested. During Dickens weekend, she came to Carlyle to show people here what she had to offer.

Although stereotypes might suggest otherwise, Bessant said she's surprised how people react. "People now come up to me at events and say they've heard of my stuff," said Bessant. "Word of mouth has been amazing. I knew there were markets for this but I didn't know this area would work out so well."

EarthWear products do not contain any of harmful ingredients, therefore, they are safe for all skin types, including sensitive or problem-prone skin. Bessant backs up her products at shows by providing people with a complete list of all the ingredients in her products. "I have an ingredients list for each product," said Bessant. "It says what the ingredient is and why it's in the product."

Now before people jump up and accuse her of jumping on the all-natural, organic, environmentally friendly bandwagon all the large corporations hopped on over the last couple of years, undestand Bessant practices what she preaches. "In our house, for probably seven years we've used safe products," said Bessant. "It started as being friendly to our bodies and went to our house. We eat organic when we can and we make some of our own cleansers. In the summer, we grow an organic garden."

Bessant makes all the products herself, so people can rest assure that what she says is in the products are actually in the products. "I infuse all my own oils," said Bessant. "I come up with my own recipes that I test to find out my results. It's a lot of trial and error and preference."

After a year of working on various products, Bessant now offers a line of great handmade face and body products which many people love. Her line includes lotions, face cleansers and toners for various skin types, a number of bath products, a lip balm and after shave. She hopes to expand this line in the future, but for now, she's just trying to get past Christmas.

"I've been real busy for the last month," said Bessant. "I've been up until midnight, sometimes every night, then I'm busy on weekends selling it."

EarthWear may fill up most of Bessant's spare time (she works full-time during the day), but she doesn't seem to mind, mostly because she loves throwing herself into making the products. "I'm always excited to start new recipes," said Bessant. "I even dream about it. I use it every day. I love getting ready in the morning and washing my face. It feels good to use my own stuff."

And Bessant hopes others will feel good using her stuff too, especially knowing it's all-natural. "It's handmade with no chemicals or toxic additives," said Bessant. "I believe everyone should know what they're wearing. Lots of people just don't know. I just want to be the person to tell them. People can look at the ingredients in the stuff in their home."

As Bessant continues to make a name for herself while spreading the word about the advantages of natural products, she said she'd love to make it her full-time career one day. "I would love to make a living from it, but I don't want to raise my price doing it," said Bessant. "I want people to be able to buy it. There's no reason to charge more than what I need to cover my costs of products, postage and time."

Her prices, are in fact, reasonable, especially considering the amount of time that goes into making each of her products. "I make small batches of everything," said Bessant. "The bath salts are each made in a separate bowl. Each batch of lotion makes about 500 ml. It takes a lot of time."
